Winter Is Here! Don't Forget Your Sunglasses

It's official! Winter is here, which means in some parts of the country bitter cold winds and freezing precipitation are also in the forecast. The majority of us would never even think of leaving the house without a heavy sweater or coat in icy climates, but unfortunately, a lot of people don't think to put on their sunglasses. Although the sun isn't always our primary consideration during times that we are battling the frigid cold, the sun's rays are still shining down during the winter months, and in certain circumstances can be even stronger.

They didn't write a song called "winter wonderland" for nothing. Especially following a serious snow fall, the blanket of snow covering the ground, trees and everything else in sight, actually intensifies the reflection of the sun. In fact, it can be painful to open your eyes when you first step outside after a fresh snow. The ultraviolet exposure that we are all so vigilant about during the heat of the summer may actually be more hazardous during the winter months because it reflects off the snow or ice, resulting in a second exposure. This is the reason sunglasses are a necessary winter accessory.

While you want to pick a style you look good in, the most important consideration when choosing sunglasses is making sure they will properly protect your eyes. Ensure they are 100% UV blocking by checking for confirmation that they are labeled UV 400 (this means they block all light with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers, which includes both UVA and UVB rays.) The good news is proper protection for your eyes isn't necessarily expensive. Dozens of affordable brands are made with complete UV defense.

A further important factor in selecting sun wear is the size of the lenses. You will have the most protection when the lenses completely guard your eyes and if possible the areas around them. The more coverage you have, the less harmful UV rays will be able to enter. Glasses with side shield will also prevent harmful rays from sneaking in through the sides.

Although it's much more commonly known these days that sunglasses are essential beach gear because the water reflects sunlight, this is also true for wintery water as well. Therefore it is equally critical to wear sunglasses during times when you go out skiing, ice skating or even taking a walk on a snowy day. Additionally ultraviolet radiation is stronger at high elevations, so if you have plans to hit the slopes take this into consideration.

Be in the know about adequate eye protection all year long. Make your sunglasses a fixed part of your routine.
